The Perfect Senior Session With Horses in St. Augustine

Senior pictures at a horse barn in St. Augustine

Brooke was meant to have her senior pictures with horses!  She was raised with these horses!  Brooke’s parents got Tyson the year that she was born and she grew up with him.  I am so excited how her senior session celebrates this love with Tyson and her very own horse, Sal.  These are the sweetest pictures!

I am Mollie of Mollie Jane Photography.  I have been a photographer for 20 years!  I absolutely love photographing seniors and capturing who they are during this important transition.  If you are loving these, definitely check out my website.  I would love to photograph your’s or your senior’s session this year!

One of my favorite things about senior pictures is making them personal. Your senior session should tell the story of who you are during this exciting season of life. For many seniors, like Brooke, that story wouldn’t be complete without their horse.

Whether you’ve spent years riding competitively or simply can’t imagine a week without heading to the barn, your horse has been part of your high school journey. Those early mornings, long afternoons, and weekends spent riding, practicing, and caring for your horse have shaped some of your favorite memories.

Senior pictures are about celebrating everything that has made these years special, and including your horse is a beautiful way to honor that chapter. Years from now, you’ll look back on these photos and remember not only what you looked like as a senior, but also the incredible bond you shared with a companion, or two, who was there through it all.

The location you choose plays a huge role in the overall feel of your senior pictures. Whether you envision a rustic countryside setting or a more coastal look, we’ll work together to find a location that reflects your personality. It’s so important to create a relaxed experience for both you and your horse.

My goal is to help you choose a location with beautiful light, gorgeous scenery, and plenty of space so we can create natural, timeless portraits you’ll treasure for years to come.

Many seniors choose to have their session at their own barn, where both they and their horse feel completely at home. Familiar surroundings often help everyone relax, resulting in genuine moments and beautiful photographs.

That is what we did for Brooke’s senior pictures.  We did them at the beautiful barn in St. Augustine, Star 4,where they board the horses.  A couple of days before the session, I met Brooke’s mom at the barn to see the light and locations, so I could make decisions quickly that day.

If you’re looking for a different backdrop, open pastures, peaceful fields, tree lined trails, and the iconic oak canopies around St. Augustine all create stunning settings for senior portraits. If your horse is comfortable traveling, we can even explore a coastal location for a one of a kind session with Florida’s beautiful scenery.

Before choosing a location, we’ll make sure horses are welcome and that we have permission to photograph there. Every horse has a different comfort level, so selecting the right environment is just as important as choosing a beautiful backdrop.

I’ll help you find a location that photographs beautifully while allowing you, your horse, and anyone assisting during the session to feel comfortable and relaxed. When everyone can simply enjoy the experience, that’s when the most authentic images happen.

Choosing the right outfits can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your senior pictures. The goal is to wear something that feels like you while complementing the natural beauty of your surroundings and the special bond you share with your horse.

I always encourage seniors to choose outfits they feel confident and comfortable wearing because that confidence shines through in every photograph.

For Brooke’s senior session with her horse, I sent her some ideas in a mood board that had a western theme with turquoise jewelry. I thought that it would be such a beautiful statement.  I was so happy when I got to the session and she said that she loved the look!  It is such a joy for me to help my senior girls feel beautiful!

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully, especially when they catch a gentle breeze, adding movement and a soft, timeless feel to your images. If your style is more relaxed, a pair of well fitting jeans with your favorite boots creates a classic look that feels right at home around the barn or in an open field.

I recommend bringing two or three outfits so we can create a variety of looks throughout your session. Whether you prefer something dressy, casual, or a little bit of both, we’ll create a gallery that feels uniquely you.

Neutral colors, soft earth tones, and classic textures tend to photograph best because they keep the focus on you rather than your clothing. Creams, whites, soft blues, sage greens, dusty pinks, and denim all pair beautifully with Florida’s natural landscapes.

When we were putting Brooke’s outfits together, I actually searched for Boho tops and I found a lot that went so perfectly with the western theme and boots.

Try to avoid clothing with large logos or busy patterns that can distract from your portraits. When planning your outfits, think about complementing your horse’s coloring instead of trying to perfectly match. The most beautiful images happen when everything feels natural, effortless, and authentic to your personality.

One of the best ways to ensure a relaxed and enjoyable senior session is to bring someone who knows your horse well. Whether that’s a parent, trainer, trusted friend, or your barn manager, having an extra set of hands makes the experience smoother for everyone and allows us to focus on creating beautiful, natural portraits together.

I grew up in Southern California in a horse community, horse trails were everywhere with those classic white fences.  It makes me feel so comfortable seeing them.  Even though I grew up with them around me, I honestly don’t remember the last time I was on a horse.  So I rely on the expertise of those with me when handling the horse.

During your session, your helper can assist with everything from getting your horse’s attention to helping with positioning between photos. They know your horse’s personality and the little things that help them feel calm and comfortable.

While they’re keeping an eye on your horse, you can relax, enjoy the experience, and focus on having fun in front of the camera. Some of the sweetest moments happen when you forget about the camera and simply interact with your horse, and having someone there to lend a hand makes those moments even easier to capture.

Every horse has a unique personality, and I believe the best photographs happen when everyone feels comfortable. I always let you or your horse’s handler guide interactions and would never ask your horse to do anything outside of its comfort level.

My job is to create beautiful images while respecting your horse and the people who know them best. By working together, we can create a safe, relaxed environment that allows your genuine connection to shine through, resulting in timeless senior portraits you’ll treasure for years to come.

One of the questions I get asked is whether I’m a horse photographer. The answer is no, and that’s actually what makes these sessions so special. I photograph relationships, not horses.

While your horse is certainly an important part of your senior session, what I’m really capturing is the connection the two of you share. My focus is on the quiet moments, genuine emotions, and memories that tell your story in a way you’ll treasure long after graduation.

Every horse has a personality of its own, and that’s part of the fun. Some are curious and want to explore every inch of the field. Others are perfectly happy standing beside you, while a few may decide they’ve had enough and are ready for a snack or a break.

Those unexpected moments often become everyone’s favorite images because they’re real. Instead of forcing perfectly posed portraits, I embrace the little moments of laughter, movement, and personality that make your session uniquely yours.

The images you’ll treasure most are usually the ones you never planned. A gentle nose nuzzle. Resting your forehead against your horse’s. Walking side by side down a quiet trail. Holding the reins while laughing with your mom just outside the frame. Brushing your horse before we begin. Sitting on a fence while soaking in the moment.

We’ll create a beautiful mix of wide scenic portraits that showcase the incredible landscapes around St. Augustine along with close up images that highlight the bond you’ve built over the years.

At the end of the day, these sessions aren’t about creating perfect horse portraits. They’re about celebrating this season of your life and preserving the relationship you’ve built with a companion who has been there through so many memories. Those are the photographs that never go out of style.

A little preparation goes a long way in creating a relaxed, enjoyable senior session. Preparation is important for any session, but when you add in a horse, it is even more important. The more we plan ahead, the more time you’ll have to simply enjoy the experience with your horse.

My goal is for your session to feel fun and stress free, allowing us to capture authentic moments that reflect your personality and the special bond you share.

One of my biggest tips is to avoid rushing. Horses have their own personalities and their own schedules, and that’s perfectly okay. Giving ourselves plenty of extra time means there’s no pressure if your horse needs a few extra minutes to settle in, take a break, or simply check out their surroundings.

A relaxed timeline also gives us the freedom to change outfits, explore different areas of your location, and wait for the most beautiful light. Some of the best images happen in between the poses, so allowing extra time lets those natural moments unfold.

Before your session, make sure your horse is groomed and ready for photos, and don’t forget any tack or accessories you’d like included in your portraits. Bringing a brush, a towel, water for both you and your horse, and a few treats if they’re part of your horse’s normal routine can also be helpful.

Most importantly, come ready to have fun. Your senior session isn’t about perfection. It’s about celebrating this exciting season of your life and capturing memories with a companion who has been such an important part of your journey.

If you’re planning senior pictures with your horse in St. Augustine, you probably have a few questions. Here are some of the questions I hear most often from seniors and their parents.

Yes! If your horse has been an important part of your high school years, I’d love to include them in your senior session. We’ll work together to choose a location where horses are welcome and plan a relaxed experience that allows us to capture your connection naturally.

Many seniors choose their own barn because it’s familiar and comfortable for both them and their horse. We can also explore beautiful fields, oak-lined roads, trails, or other approved locations around St. Augustine that provide stunning backdrops.

Choose outfits that feel like you. Flowy dresses, jeans and boots, and neutral colors all photograph beautifully. I recommend bringing two or three outfits so we can create a variety of looks throughout your session.

Not at all! While I’m not specifically a horse photographer, I specialize in photographing people and the relationships that matter most to them. I work alongside you and your horse’s handler to create natural, authentic images while respecting your horse’s comfort and personality.

Yes! I highly recommend bringing a parent, trainer, friend, or barn manager who knows your horse well. They can help with positioning, getting your horse’s attention, and keeping everything running smoothly so you can simply enjoy your session.

Plan to arrive early and allow extra time. We never want to rush a horse. Giving ourselves flexibility creates a more relaxed experience and often leads to the most genuine photographs.

The best senior sessions aren’t about just checking a box. It’s not ONLY about the perfect outfit or glamorous senior portrait for the wall.  They’re about celebrating who you are right now. Whether that’s surfing, dancing, playing soccer, spending every weekend at the barn, or simply watching the sunset on the beach, your session should tell your story.
