There are some wedding venues that are beautiful because of what you bring into them. And then there are venues that do some of the decorating for you. A Karpeles Grand wedding in Jacksonville is definitely the second kind.

Its historic architecture, soaring ceilings, dramatic staircase, beautiful natural light and grand ballroom gives a wedding photographer so many places to create photographs that feel elegant and light-filled.  That is hard to find in historic wedding venues!

Originally built in 1921 in the Classical Revival style, Karpeles Grand is one of those venues where the building does a lot of the work for you. After photographing a wedding here, one of the things I loved most was how much variety we could get without spending your wedding day driving all over Jacksonville for photos.

You will have beautiful backdrops right where you’re getting married, gorgeous indoor options if Florida decides to do its thing, and so many different spaces to create images that feel like you. All without turning your wedding day into one giant photo shoot. Because you should actually get to enjoy your wedding, too!

One of my favorite things about Karpeles Grand is that the building itself already has so much going on. And while I will always be a big fan of beautiful florals, thoughtful details and making your wedding feel like YOU, you don’t have to spend quite as much trying to add interest to every corner of the room.

The historic architecture, grand staircase, dramatic windows, high ceilings and all those beautiful little details give us so much to work with. Your florals and décor can complement the space instead of having to completely transform it.

And as a photographer, I love that. There are already so many interesting places to photograph you, your details and your guests that the images don’t all have to rely on what you brought in. The building adds its own layer of character to your gallery.

There Are Indoor Photo Options If Florida Weather Doesn’t Cooperate

Let’s be honest: Florida weather has a personality of its own. 

One minute it’s sunny and gorgeous, and the next you’re wondering if your outdoor portraits are about to turn into a rainstorm.

In fact, at Jarrett and Jordan’s wedding, during getting ready, the first look and their couple pictures, there was a huge storm.  But we didn’t even know!  We were inside the whole time.  The weather cleared up and we got to go outside for all of the other pictures that we wanted!

A Karpeles Grand wedding doesn’t depend on perfect weather to have beautiful photographs.

There are so many gorgeous indoor spaces throughout the venue that we can still create beautiful portraits if the weather decides not to cooperate. The natural light, architecture, staircases and different rooms give us plenty of options without having to load everyone into cars and drive somewhere else.

That means you can have a little more peace of mind knowing that rain doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your wedding portraits.

There Are Multiple Levels and Spaces to Create Variety

Another thing I loved about photographing a wedding at Karpeles Grand was the variety. You’re not stuck taking every photograph in the same room.

The different levels and spaces throughout the building allow us to change the feel of your photographs as the day moves along. We can photograph your details and getting-ready moments, move into the grander architectural spaces for portraits, and then use the ballroom and other areas for completely different images during the celebration.

For you, that means your final gallery can feel full and varied without your wedding day feeling rushed.

We can create the big, dramatic images, the beautiful portraits, the candid moments and all the little in-between photographs all while staying right where your wedding is happening.

I loved photographing my couple on the stairs, in the foyer in the basement and the mezzanine. And then, of course, outside on the grand entry, so beautiful!

And then there’s the outside.

The exterior of Karpeles Grand is just as impressive as the inside. With its grand white columns, beautiful staircase and historic architecture, it gives you another stunning setting for portraits without ever having to leave the venue.

I especially love how different the photographs feel out here. Inside, you have the beautiful details, dramatic windows and grand spaces of the building. Outside, you get the clean white architecture, those incredible columns and the staircase leading up to the doors. It’s classic, timeless and unmistakably Karpeles Grand.

For a wedding photographer, that’s a pretty great combination: a beautiful venue, gorgeous light and lots of places to make your photographs feel different while still feeling like they belong together.

WHERE CAN YOU TAKE YOUR WEDDING PICTURES AT THE KARPELES GRAND?

One of the best things about photographing a Karpeles Grand wedding is how many beautiful options you have for portraits. And I’m not just talking about one pretty corner of the venue. There are several spaces that each give your photographs a completely different feel.

Here are a few of my favorite spots for wedding pictures at Karpeles Grand.

The Grand Staircase

If you’ve seen a Karpeles Grand wedding, you’ve probably noticed the staircase. And for good reason!

The grand staircase is one of those spots that makes a statement all on its own. The beautiful architecture, sweeping staircase and gorgeous natural light give us the perfect setting for portraits that feel elegant without feeling overly posed.

The Grand Ballroom

The ballroom gives us that classic, grand Karpeles Grand look. With the tall ceilings, beautiful windows and architectural details, there is so much depth and dimension in this space. 

It is an absolutely amazing reception space!  The windows give light that my natural light loving heart swoons over!  Your tablescapes and details, whether simple or extravagant will look amazing in this light!  Make sure that your photographer has time to photograph and empty room because it is amazing.  And the 2nd level balcony will offer another angle that most brides don’t get of their reception set up.

The Historic Exterior

And then there is the exterior, which absolutely deserves a spot on your must-have photo list.

This is also where we can really let the architecture shine. Instead of adding a lot of extra elements to the photograph, we can keep things simple and let the building, the light and the two of you do the work.

That’s one of my favorite things about Karpeles Grand. Every space has its own personality, so your gallery can include grand portraits, beautiful architectural images, close-up moments and photographs that capture the feeling of the day, all while still feeling cohesive and exactly what you wanted from your wedding day.

WHERE DO THE BRIDE AND GROOM GET READY AT THE KARPELES GRAND?

One of the first questions couples have when touring a wedding venue is, “Okay, but where are we actually getting ready?” And if you hear that the bridal suite and groom’s suite at Karpeles Grand are in the basement, you might immediately picture something dark and, well… basement-y. 

But don’t let the word basement scare you!

The getting-ready spaces at Karpeles Grand have so much natural light, and after photographing a wedding there, I was pleasantly surprised by just how bright and beautiful they were. They felt like a really comfortable place to start the wedding day, and there was plenty of light for those important getting-ready photographs.

The Bridal Suite

The bridal suite is where so much of the wedding day begins. Hair and makeup, bridesmaids getting ready, the dress hanging up, shoes, jewelry, invitations and all those little details you’ve carefully chosen. There is so much happening before you ever walk down the aisle!

And while the bridal suite is located downstairs, it doesn’t have that dark basement feeling you might be imagining. There is beautiful natural light throughout the space, which makes such a difference for both the experience and the photographs.

I loved being able to photograph those quiet moments of Jarrett getting ready with her mom and sister and all of those little details in a space that actually felt bright and inviting.

It’s also nice to have a dedicated space where you can take a breath, finish getting ready and enjoy those last few moments with your favorite people before the day really gets going.

The Groom’s Suite

The groom’s suite is downstairs as well, and just like the bridal suite, it has plenty of light and felt much brighter than you might expect from a basement-level space.  Especially for a groom’s suite that so many venues think they need to make dark (but they don’t).

This is where the guys can hang out, get ready and have a little fun before the ceremony. It’s also a great opportunity for those candid photographs that tell the story of the day. The ties going on, jackets being buttoned, the guys joking around and those last-minute moments before everyone heads upstairs.

I actually loved having both getting-ready spaces downstairs. It kept the beginning of the day organized while giving each side of the wedding their own space to get ready and spend time together.

CAN YOU HAVE BOTH YOUR CEREMONY AND YOUR RECEPTION AT KARPELES GRAND WEDDING VENUE?

Absolutely! At Karpeles Grand you have several options for where you can say “I do,” and then you can celebrate your reception in the Grand Ballroom afterward.

For this wedding, the couple chose to have their ceremony downstairs, in the space between the bridal suite and the groom’s suite. It was such a perfect choice. The space was bright and filled with natural light, and having their ceremony there made the beginning of their day feel really intimate and personal with just their families.

But that’s not your only option! Depending on the feel you want for your wedding, there are several beautiful places throughout Karpeles Grand that could work for your ceremony.

A Ceremony in the Grand Ballroom

If you want your ceremony to have that classic, grand wedding feel, the ballroom is a beautiful option. The high ceilings, gorgeous architecture and natural light create a beautiful setting for walking down the aisle. And since the reception can take place in the same space, it can make the transition from ceremony to celebration really seamless. 

A Ceremony at the Front of Karpeles Grand

And then there is the front of the building. With those incredible white columns, historic doors and grand staircase, it makes a pretty spectacular setting for a wedding ceremony.

There is something so beautiful about saying your vows surrounded by that historic architecture. It feels elegant and timeless, and of course, it makes for some pretty amazing photographs!

A More Intimate Ceremony Downstairs

For Jordan and Jarrett, the downstairs ceremony space was perfect. The open space in the basement created a more intimate atmosphere and allowed their ceremony to feel like a really special part of the day before everyone moved upstairs to celebrate. 

At Karpeles Grand, your ceremony doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. You can choose the grand ballroom, the iconic front of the building, or a more intimate space downstairs depending on the feeling you want for your wedding day. And then, when it’s time to celebrate, you have the beautiful Grand Ballroom waiting for you.

HOW MANY GUESTS CAN THE KARPELES GRAND ACCOMMODATE?

Karpeles Grand offers flexible layouts, so the maximum guest count depends on which spaces you’re using and how your wedding is configured. If you’re considering the venue for a larger celebration, I recommend confirming your specific guest count directly with the venue. 

Jordan and Jarrett had about 170 guests and they used just the Grand Ballroom for their reception.  It would depend on the configuration of your tables and how big you wanted your dance floor.  In my 20 years of experience, I think that the Grand Ballroom is a great size for 150-170 people!

Jordan and Jarrett had a wonderful time at their reception with their guest!  Jarrett even said on Instagram, after their reception, it was the best day ever!  And it definitely was!

After photographing a wedding at Karpeles Grand, I can honestly say I loved it. As a photographer who is always looking for beautiful, natural light, I was especially excited by how well this historic venue photographs.

It’s not always easy to find beautiful natural light inside a historic building. You can have incredible architecture and gorgeous details, but if the windows and natural light aren’t there, it can be a challenge. Karpeles Grand has both.

The windows throughout the venue bring in beautiful, soft light that works so well with the historic architecture. Then you step outside to that gorgeous white building, which reflects the Florida sunshine beautifully onto the couple. The result is the dreamiest, softest, light-filled images. You get all of the character and timelessness of a historic venue while still having that bright, airy feeling that I love so much.

And I think that’s what makes Karpeles Grand such a special option for a Jacksonville wedding. You get the history, the architecture and all of those beautiful details, along with a setting that photographs beautifully throughout the day. And as a photographer, that makes me very happy.
