Even on a day with record-breaking heat, a Houston LDS Temple wedding is gorgeous! Can you even tell that Justin and Anna were roasting? They were such troopers and it all paid off! I am so excited about their wedding pictures.
I feel so grateful on these days for not only my experience shooting weddings for the last 17 years, but for that experience photographing temple weddings. On any day with weather issues, whether it is rain, wind, snow, or, in our case HEAT, we have to move fast! There is no time to stop and think, make sure you aren’t missing anything. In these cases, we just have to GO. And that we did!
I like to have between an hour or 2 at the temple, during that time we get the couple coming out of the temple, the group shot we your guests in front of the temple, family, wedding party, and finally your couple pictures. On this day we were able to move quickly and we got it done in over an hour, but not quite an hour and a half.
What are my tips for shooting in the heat at the Houston Temple? Well, survival. Just kidding, water, lots and lots of water! Also, there is quite a bit of shade at the temple, so we are able to take shade breaks. If we are lucky, like on Anna and Justin’s wedding day, we had some cloud cover, so that offered a little bit of relief.
Also, try to not schedule pictures for the heat of the day. This is not always possible. When scheduling your sealing at the Houston Temple, many times you just have to take what they have on the day that you need. If you take the earliest possible session, you may be able to avoid the hottest part of the day, but the light is not ideal for photography then. At the Houston Temple, in the morning, the light shines right on the front of the temple, which makes the pictures up there difficult. If you take the latest session, you also may be able to avoid the heat of the day and the lighting is ideal for pictures because the sun goes down behind the temple. Gorgeous. I do understand that this makes scheduling your reception hard.
Also, if you are planning a Houston summer wedding, a bridal session with your groom at the temple during that golden hour may be a good idea. That may speed up pictures on a hot day.
BUT, despite all of that, we got some amazing pictures at Anna and Justin’s wedding on a hot May day at the Houston LDS Temple. I can’t wait for you to see the number of pictures we were able to get!
