St. Augustine Proposal Guide: The Most Romantic Places to Propose in St. Augustine

So you are planning a St. Augustine proposal to the love of your life!!!  This is an exciting time, but it is, probably, also super overwhelming.  That is why I wrote this blog post!  As a photographer, for the last 20 years, photographing weddings, engagements and proposals. I hope to calm all of your nerves and answer all of your questions right here.

Proposal at the Lightner Museum
Proposing in the Lightner museum courtyard

There’s just something about St. Augustine that makes it feel like it was made for moments like this. That is why it is such a popular tourist destination. Maybe it’s the way the light hits the historic streets at sunset. You can go from cobblestone charm to quiet beach views in just a few minutes, but it has this effortless kind of romance that you don’t have to force. If you’re planning a St. Augustine proposal, you don’t need over-the-top decorations or a complicated setup. The beautiful, historic setting already does so much of the work for you.

What I love most is how many different vibes you can create here depending on what feels most like you. It can be intimate and tucked away by the water, at the pier or bridge.  You wander through the historic downtown for something a little more lively. You can find a quiet alleyway with bright colored walls and ancient gates or head to the beach at sunset to create a moment that feels completely private. And don’t forget the beautiful Lightner museum, like this sweet couple did.  Or even Flagler College would be an amazing option to plan your engagement. It’s the kind of place where your proposal can feel natural, personal, and unforgettable all at the same time, which is exactly how it should be.

There are so many options to choose from!  So let me break it down for you so it’s less overwhelming.

St. Augustine marriage engagement

This fountain is located in front of the Lightner Museum at 75 King St. It is one of the Flagler Era fountains that was built in the late 1800s.  This is where Chandler proposed to Katie in this St. Augustine engagement proposal.

This location has an absolutely beautiful backdrop.  So iconically St. Augustine!  And!  The best news is, it doesn’t require a permit and photography fee!  For their session, I had 2 photographers.  I took the main spot to get the wider angles and my 2nd shooter photographed the up close angles and reactions.

Why I love having 2 photographers at a proposal

Having 2 photographers at any proposal is so wonderful, but especially at more public locations.  The fountain is definitely more public!  There is very little control of who is going to walk by. There are trollies of tourists that go behind you. Or even, sometimes a walking tour of senior citizens will be taking pictures of the statue of the Spanish conquistador who founded St. Augustine, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés.

That is also why having 2 photographers is very helpful.  I had my 2nd photographer ask some visitors to move (in the most polite way) so that they wouldn’t be right in the frame.  And it worked out perfectly!

The best time to shoot here, to have the least amount of crowds, would be on a weekday morning.  Chandler chose a Wednesday morning. They went and got breakfast and coffee nearby and then walked down the Lightner to completely surprise Kate with one of the best moments of her life!

Since it is in a wide open area, for the best pictures, the best lighting would be the morning. The end of golden hour, about an hour before sunset would be a good option too.

But, as always, you can contact me, and I will give you my professional opinion. Timing of the day and what day of the week you are choosing is so important.  There are so many nuances that I would love to help you with.

Getting engaged in St. Augustine

This area used to be a central area to the Hotel Alcazar’s grounds.  And now it is one of the most recognizable photography features. It is especially popular for weddings and marriage proposals in St. Augustine.

That being said, it is also not a free option for your St. Augustine proposal.  To photograph your engagement (or any other kind of session) requires a permit that is $250 and a reserved time.  You can see all of that information on how to get your permit for your Lightner Museum proposal HERE. The central courtyard and loggia are managed by the City of St. Augustine through a contracted manager, The Wedding Authority (904-826-0166).

One bonus is that it is private!  You won’t have random people walking in and out of your pictures.  There will also be time to get pictures in this area and hallways that are so pretty!  Plus, all the areas that would be an option around the Lightner Museum fountain.

If it is in your budget, you can plan ahead and privacy is important to you, this could be a wonderful option!

If you’re looking to get engaged in St. Augustine at a spot that feels iconic and meaningful, Castillo de San Marcos is hard to beat. There’s something about standing next to a structure that has been there for centuries. It adds this quiet sense of permanence that just fits the moment. The open waterfront, the coquina walls, the way the sky opens up around you. It all creates a backdrop that feels both grand and incredibly romantic without trying too hard.

What I love most about this spot for a proposal is how versatile it is. You can keep it simple with a walk along the bay and pause at just the right moment. Or plan it for golden hour when the light hits the fort and everything glows. There’s enough space to find a more private corner, but still that energy of St. Augustine all around you. And from a photography standpoint, it’s one of those locations that just always delivers. It’s timeless, clean, and full of character in a way that will never feel dated when you look back on it years from now.

Timing in a Tourist Town

Because St. Augustine is a tourist town, my suggestion is to always plan for a weekday.  The weekends are always busier, especially in public areas!  And, there are times of the year that are just naturally busier. Spring Breaks and any holiday season can be much busier. The Night of Lights, which runs mid November to mid January, is especially busy!  If you want a Christmas feel, the beginning of December or January might be a good option. Thanksgiving, Christmas break or any weekend during this time should be completely avoided, it is CHAOS!

Timing during the day is the same as pretty much everywhere. Mornings (early) or golden hour before sunset will be ideal for a proposal either walking along the waterfront or near the Castillo San Marcos.

One of my favorite spots is in the mote. At golden hour the light is amazing!!!!  Breathtaking!  And it is more private than most places.  Bonus, it is free and does not require a permit!  You can have an early dinner and then wander down around the Castillo.  The ideas are endless and I am here for you to figure it all out seamlessly!

Getting engaged at the Lightner Museum

What a view!!! The climb to the top is 219 stairs. But it would be such an amazing moment to propose in St. Augustine at the beautiful light house!

This is one spot that I suggest just one photographer.  I know, shocking!  But it is tight up there.  But absolutely worth it!

We would plan the entire thing out. We would make sure that you were on the correct side for me to get her reaction.  I have a wide lens, which is absolutely necessary to capture such a huge moment in a tiny space.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse does require a permit to shoot there!  So planning ahead is necessary.  You get a permit through the city of St. Augustine. That is something that I can take care of, so you don’t have to.

Getting engaged on top of the world at your favorite St. Augustine attraction would be so memorable!

If a quiet, intimate moment is what you’re drawn to, Vilano Beach is one of my favorite places for a proposal. Honestly, it just feels different out there in the best way. It’s a little removed from the busier parts of St. Augustine. You’re not fighting crowds or feeling like you have an audience. It gives you space to actually be present with each other. The dunes, the wide shoreline, and the softer, more natural feel of the beach make everything feel relaxed and unforced. The moment can just unfold exactly how it’s supposed to.

From a planning perspective, Vilano is kind of a dream because it’s simple in all the right ways. You can take a walk along the water, pause when it feels right, and it doesn’t feel staged or overdone. The sunset here is especially beautiful—the light tends to be softer and more golden, and you’ll often get those peaceful, open stretches of beach that feel almost private.

If you want to elevate it just a little, this is the perfect place for something like a subtle picnic setup waiting for you, there are companies locally that set up special picnics that would make proposing easy and unforgettable.

But, it’s also one of those locations where your proposal feels less like a production and more like a really meaningful, personal moment, and that always translates beautifully in photos.

As always, the morning or evening are the best time!  At the beach, I am a big fan of the golden hour light.  It is my favorite.  There are times of year that the beach will be busier (aka Spring Break and Summer) and so that is something to keep in mind.

These are just a few of the options available!!  There is also Magnolia St, Aviles St, The Bridge of Lions, the marina, Memorial Presbyterian Church. Or, you can choose, one of the many adorable restaurants in St. Augustine. I could go on and on. I would love to talk to you about your vision and bring it to life, simple or elaborate!

Planning a proposal can feel like a lot of pressure. You want it to be meaningful, seamless, and something they’ll remember forever. The good news? If you’re planning a St. Augustine proposal, the location is already working in your favor. From there, it’s just about being intentional with a few key details so everything feels natural and effortless.

Marriage proposal at the Lightner museum

The first step is picking a spot that actually feels like you. Or it can be spot that you want to be part of this forever memory.  The cute couple in these pictures had never been to St. Augustine before. Chandler knew he wanted the grandeur of the Lightner Museum to be part of their story. Think about the kind of moment you want to create. Do you picture something quiet and tucked away, or something with a little more energy around you?

Spots like Vilano Beach or the Lightner Courtyard Garden are perfect if you want something more private and relaxed. You can take your time and really be in the moment. If you’re drawn to something more iconic and timeless, Castillo de San Marcos gives you that historic, meaningful backdrop that feels a little more elevated. There’s no “right” choice here, it just depends on what feels most like your relationship.

Timing can completely change the feel of your proposal. My favorite light of the day is golden hour, right before sunset. This is when the light is soft, warm, and honestly just really flattering in photos. It also tends to feel a little more relaxed than the middle of the day.

The morning light can work also.  If you are morning people, this might work great!  For the most part, I would avoid the middle part of the day for lighting.  It is harsh overhead light that causes shadows under your eyes.

If you’re hoping for something more private, earlier in the morning is better. A weekday evening can make a big difference in avoiding crowds. And if you’re planning during peak season in St. Augustine, give yourself a little extra buffer time is always a good idea.

Proposals in St. Augustine

This is the part most people don’t think about—but it’s what makes everything flow. Instead of making the proposal feel like a big, obvious moment, think about what leads into it.

Maybe it’s a casual walk along the beach. You could explore downtown, or heading to “grab dinner” before you pause at just the right spot. When the proposal feels like a natural part of your time together instead of a hard stop, it takes the pressure off both of you. It will help the moment feel more genuine.

Chandler and Katie were on the first day of their St. Augustine trip.  They went to get coffee at a cute coffee shop near the Lightner Museum. Then they took a walk to where Chandler and I had planned.  It was so natural and Katie was shocked!  She said that she had an idea Chandler might be proposing that weekend. But she had no idea that it would be then.  Surprise achieved!  Because the “lead up” flowed so smoothly into the day.

Florida weather likes to keep things interesting, so it’s always smart to have a backup plan in your back pocket. That could mean adjusting timing, choosing a secondary location, or just being flexible if needed.

The key here is not letting a small change throw off the whole plan. Some of the best moments happen when things don’t go exactly as expected.

I am a seasoned southern-weather photographer.  Although I wish I could tell what was going to happen, I cannot.  But I do know how to go with the flow. I’ve learned to be calm when the weather is not cooperating and finding Plan B.  That is an additional benefit of hiring a professional photographer to photograph your St. Augustine proposal.

St. Augustine proposals

Once it happens… slow down. This is the moment you’ve been planning, and it goes by so quickly. After you get engaged, I love to get some pictures of you to celebrate the moment.  Some of my future grooms have an idea what they want. And some trust me to lead them around St. Augustine. This is where everything starts to feel really natural. During this time, the pressure is gone and you can just enjoy being engaged.

Have a fun plan for after!  That’s easy in St. Augustine, there are so many fun things to do!  Chandler and Katie were going on a sunset boat cruise!

In my opinion, everyone should get engaged in St. Augustine!!!

Figuring out what to wear for your proposal might not be the first thing on your mind. This actually makes a big difference in how everything feels (and how your photos turn out). The goal is to keep things timeless and effortless so the focus stays on the moment, not the outfits. I always recommend leaning into neutral tones, think soft whites, creams, tans, light blues, or muted pastels. These photograph beautifully in St. Augustine’s natural light and won’t compete with the scenery. And if you can, avoid bold logos or super busy patterns. These tend to pull attention away from you and can make photos feel a little more dated over time.

If you’re trying to guide what she wears without giving anything away (which I know can feel like a delicate balance), keep it simple and casual. You could suggest grabbing dinner somewhere a little nicer. Mention that you want to take a few photos together while you’re out. You can even say you’ve been wanting an updated picture of the two of you. Another easy approach is to dress slightly more elevated yourself, she’ll naturally match your level without questioning it. The key is to make it feel like a normal plan, just slightly more intentional. That way, when the moment happens, everything feels natural, but still looks amazing in photos.

To be 100% honest, your future fiancee, like Katie, probably has an idea that it’s coming. It is a sixth sense that women have to pick up on the signs that it might be close and they are always kind of ready.   That doesn’t make it any less special or emotional. They may not know exactly when. When you create natural moments, like Chandler, you can still pull off the surprise of her life!  That doesn’t make it any less special or emotional.

Get engaged to be married in St. Augustine

Obviously, I’m going to say YES!  But I’m also going to tell you WHY.  One big reason is that she probably told you she wanted you to hire a photographer when you proposed.  If she didn’t get a chance to tell you, I promise, she wants you to!  This is a once-in-a-life time kind of moment!  And you will want to remember it in a beautiful way (not on an iPhone).

Hiring a photographer reduces your stress.  I know that sounds funny, but it does!  I help you with so many logistics.  You know I will be there!  You know I have done everything in my power to clear your path.  I can help you with permits or knowing when you don’t need a permit.  There are a million things that you may not have thought of, that I have.

A St. Augustine propoal

I am a local St. Augustine photographer.  When Chandler and I were planning his proposal, we wanted to make sure the fountain area would not be super busy. He was planning it for a weekday morning, around 10am, during Spring Break.  We didn’t have to guess and hope.  I just drove over there!  When I was there I took a video of what it looked like. I recorded the path that he should walk from the coffee shop. And exactly where he would stand and where I would be.  No guessing.  I want you to feel completely relaxed!

Watch the video below to see one of the ways that I helped Chandler plan his proposal:
