It’s the time of year you are preparing for the fun tradition of pictures with Santa! And you are nervous and wondering how to prepare your kids for their first or second visit with Santa.
The holiday season brings countless magical moments for families, and one sweet tradition is introducing young children to Santa Claus. For some children, meeting Santa can be a dream come true; for others, the big man in the red suit may seem a little overwhelming.
Do not worry! Here are five tips to help prepare your child for their very first visit for pictures with Santa, making it as smooth and enjoyable as possible and get those precious pictures that last forever!
It doesn’t matter if you are going to the mall Santa or a Santa in the studio or, like we did at Mollie Jane Photography this year, we had a sweet outdoor experience with Santa. These tips from your Houston family photographer will help make your pictures with Santa perfect this year.
Begin introducing Santa as a friendly figure who spreads joy and kindness. Share stories about Santa, read holiday books, and watch family-friendly holiday movies to build a positive image of him. This gentle introduction gives your child a chance to get used to the idea and become comfortable with who Santa is before they meet him in person.
Set up a fun practice session where you pretend to be Santa, or if you have a Santa doll or figure, use that. Have your child practice saying “hello” and asking for a favorite toy or gift. This lighthearted role-playing helps children know what to expect, reducing the initial surprise. Plus, they’ll be more prepared with what to say when the big moment arrives!
Holiday clothes are adorable but often come with itchy fabrics, tight fits, or new shoes that kids aren’t used to. Choose a comfortable outfit that allows your child to feel at ease. If they’re too focused on an itchy sweater or stiff shoes, they might feel crankier or less open to the experience. Bring along a favorite stuffed animal or toy for comfort, as well.
Meeting Santa can be overwhelming for young children, and it’s okay if they’re hesitant. Encourage them to approach Santa, but don’t push if they seem uncomfortable. Santa visits are meant to be fun, and respecting their boundaries is key. Often, starting with a friendly wave or a brief greeting from a few feet away can ease initial nerves. Remember, photos don’t have to be perfect; the experience matters most!
If possible, join your child for the photo or greeting. Having familiar faces nearby reassures them and makes the experience feel safer. Holding their hand, sitting nearby, or even posing for a family picture with Santa can make it feel like a fun family outing instead of a solo adventure. Plus, these family shots often end up being holiday favorites!
Meeting Santa for the first time is a wonderful moment in any child’s life AND YOURS!!! These memories last forever!!! I remember all of my kids first visits with Santa. To be honest, I remember every visit with Santa that we have done in the last 14 years that I have had children. These are so much more than just pictures! These are core memories, not just for your kids, but for mom and for dad! With a little preparation, you can ensure it’s a magical memory to cherish, even if it’s not perfect! By talking to your child about Santa, practicing at home, and creating a comfortable, supportive atmosphere, you’re setting the stage for a fun, memorable holiday experience.
